American Prison Writing Archive Hamilton College 198 College Hill rd Clinton, NY 13323-1218 2/23/20 'American Dream' In, 1776, the people of the King's America decided to form a new government, "of the people, by the people." Not too long after that the people of that government became self-serving. Meanwhile, the people of and by, became so caught up in living the 'American Dream' that their government was able to pass laws that further propagated its own self-serving, without any care (or resistance) from its people. And now, here, we are today finally waking up to 'smell the roses'. But the 'roses' don't smell sweet or pretty anymore (did they ever?). We are lied to, continually, by those we, the people, put in power! Why is the truth so bad that the people can't know it? If, constitutionally, by the people-of-the people were to actually be practiced what would CNN have to report on that would attract viewers? How would the news than generate money to support their deceit? And is this also true of our government? Does it need to deceive to generate 'support' too? Now is it any wonder that the nations prisons (being an arm of our government) are also corrupt? (Remember, corruption by definition is dishonesty and that's deciet.) A national movement for prison reform is underway, but it will fall short as our for the people-by the pg 2 2/23/20 Dream people government will still not have given up its self-serving, decieptional ways. Are there 'secrets' a government needs to have? Certainly. But they should only be to protect its people from attack by other governments (or terrorists)! Unfortunatly, much, much, much, (and much) more is kept from us, the American People; all under the 'guise' of security. (Just as our prisons also 'hide' behind.) My hope is that a new political party actually of, by, and for the people will form and put an end to all the deciet (and double standards) our current political parties promote, and vigorously practice. Only then will true prison reform really take place. When that happens (and it will-the party thats of, by, and for) we will then truely live under a Constitution of the people, by the people that those in 1776 risked everything, including their lives, for. Lets hope it happens soon!!!
