APWA,
Here in Texas there is a saying that goes "Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time." Ironically, Texas has over a hundred prisons. Prisons where prisoners are not paid for working in industries that the prison systems profits majorly from. Prisons do however receive worktime/goodtime while incarcerated. Yet before they are released, prisoners must sign both of these away totally contradicting the point if calculations are further questioned by the institution. Prisoners specifically here on the Wynne unit live in heat past punishment. It is inhumane! The 'pigs' have air conditions!? The, you know wild animals with hooves and a snout that make the oink! oink! noise. Yes, them!? These animals have air condition while not only does the industry's product (prisoners) but it workers correctional officers also suffer from extreme Texas temperatures. Chow hall beverage containers 'only' have ice in the 'winter'! Texas Department of Corrections is a billion dollar institution. It operates much like historical slave trades. Not only do prisoners live inhumane like but staff members behave unprofessionally 80% of the time jeopardizing the institution itself. So "it" kind of rolls downhill. Then it alters the psychological views of what rehabilitation was supposed to exhibit in the minds of all involved. Prisoners have already been punished during sentencing yet the institution continue the punishment phase. I know this is no day care but human rights/constitutional rights are constantly violated and being overlooked. No one respects the prisoner rights though in this industry we are the most valueable asset. Why is that? In my next post I promise to give graphic accounts instead of mild descriptions.
Sincerely,
Clarence Dyer
