NDOC WareHouse Industry... By: Erin Kuhn-Brown According to The Merrian-Webster Dictionary, warehouse is defined as a place for the storage of merchandise or commodities, and industry refers to a department or branch of a business, and I believe that there could not be a more accurate description of what the Nevada Department of Corrections has become, especially at FMWCC in Las Vegas which is the only womens prison in Nevada. The word corrections at the tail end of NDOC is defined as to make right... And I find myself daily wondering and asking myself if that is truly what the DOC is all about, or is it actually a warehouse industry as I have come to believe now after 20 years of incarceration. If I was a business owner, and the word corrections appeared anywhere in the title or description of what my business - one - stood for as a whole I would look at it two ways: #1 Wow! I must be doing well in my business venture because the "merchandise" in my business is at a all time high, or #2 would be, Is my business really portraying a example of corrections at the end of NDOC, and I, as a business owner would have to say "no" to #2, because as I view the merchandise on my warehouse shelf I am constantly rotating the "long term" stock to add new current stock, a daily basis even though the long term stock seems ripe and ready to use to "feed" others I'm going to follow my warehouse policies, and continue to rotate ripe/Ready items to the back because some higher up stated on the merchandise order form that the product would not be ready for at least 10 years, or never, even though I can see that I truly do have ripe & Ready items that will have spoilage eventually, because everything expires past a date at some given point. The topic of warehousing must be addressed. People change, grow, have a spiritual enlightenment, mature, and - Two - Even have their lives touched by the hand & word of God. At times I find myself asking why the NDOC, Primarily at FMWCC does not revisit/reevaluate their inmates to notice & see that there are those who get it, their lives have been healed and restored, and could actually be used to the benefit of the DOC to be a active witness and example to society and the community at large to show others, who may only listen to someone who has walked futher down the road that they find themselves on, to say this is not the way life was meant to be lived, and help others make changes because of the changed life of another. The last paragraph is not what happens. The only female inmates to receive a pardon I believe in the last 15+ years was Cheryl Walker who actually was released on a compassionate release, which was actually for the comfort of the Department because Cheryl was - Three - being housed in Medical with Dementia which demanded round the clock care, and listening to her scream at the top of her lungs almost 24 a day. After she saw the Pardons Board, her release manifested itself 24 hrs later, and she passed away 2 weeks later. I truly believe that NDOC is a business, and that is why you do not hear about pardons out of Nevada especially at FMWCC, because the goal of any good business is to make a profit at the end of the year. Another amazing fact, about NDOC (FMWCC) is that all inmates have a account along with a trust fund/lock-box set up so that upon release they have some money to walk out with. The most disturbing fact that I have noticed is that everyone receives a trust fund/lockbox, regardless to sentence structure. So, even on inmates serving life without parole, which by mans standards you will not "walk" out of the DOC, they still reap the rewards of the interest pulled from the account that is full when it reaches $400.00. - four -
