Not Coming Home

A mother visits with her child and the child asks,
"Mommy, when is daddy coming home?"
She responds: "My Child, you will be grown when daddy comes home."
"Mommy, I'm four years old, how long is grown?
"My child, why do you ask when will daddy be home?"
"Mommy, I want daddy to see I tied my shoes all on my own."
"My child, you will accomplish many things before daddy comes home."
"Mommy, I'm eight years old now, how long is grown?"
"My child, why do you ask how long is grown?"
"Mommy, I want daddy to see I can ride my bike, all on my own.
"My child, we might have to move, again, before daddy comes home."
"Mom, I'm twelve years old, I think I'm grown, soon, daddy will be home?"
"My child, not yet for daddy on coming back home;
-and let me remind you're still not grown."
"Mom, I'm ready to drive, will dad be home?"
"My child, a little while longer before your father comes home."
"Mom, I'm finished with school now, how long is grown?"
"My child, why do you ask how long is grown?
"Mom, you raised me well, time I go out and live on my own."
"My child, such a young man now, much further you'll roam;
-not yet for your father coming back home."
"Mom, I'm getting married, so surely I'm grown,
-why won't dad just come on home?"
"My son, you have your life to live and decisions to make;
-when you have your own family you'll learn what it takes."
"Mom, I don't understand the words that you say,
-we lived life like he'd be home any day."
"My son, your father went to prison for crimes committed;
-he lived his life and made his own decision."
"Mom, is my dad ever coming back home?
-I'd like to show him how much I've grown."
"My son, your dad died in prison his 34th year, doing 25 to life; something neither one of us wanted you to hear.
So no, he won't be coming back home,
Now my son you must be grown."
