SAVING EARTH THROUGH POPULATION CONTROL; RESTORING QUALITY OF LIFE David Scott Harrison, (c) 2008 There are "experts" who posit that Earth has the capacity to hold ten—billion people. But at what cost to the quality of life to those people, to the flora and fauna that also inhabit Earth, to Earth herself, and to the atmosphere and out into space? At the current population of 6.6 billion the cost is already so high that it no longer can be a matter of intellectual debate that we must aggressively decrease the number of people on Earth —— for the reality is as obvious as it is irrefutable: There is virtually no problem on Earth or beyond, great or small, that cannot be traced back to the overpopulation of the human species. Let us- look at a few of those problems. According to a United Nations‘ report released on 10 April, 2007, global warming as a result of human pollution could melt Latin America's glaciers within fifteen years, cause food shortages affecting one—hundred—thirty—million people across Asia by 2050 and wipe out Africa's wheat crop; Arctic Ocean sea ice could disappear as early as 2050, leaving the polar bear, walrus, ring seals and other Arctic creatures without habitat; Brazilian rain forests will be turned into savannah wiping out thirty percent of the species now existing there; ocean levels are projected to rise by 4.3 feet by 2080, flooding cities and island populations throughout the world; warmer water will spawn larger and more dangerous hurricanes; drops in crop yields, combined with unchecked population growth, will put tens— to hundreds—of—millions of people at risk of hunger and starvation. That is just the tip of the melting iceberg. As a result of human interruptions only tvventy-one of the planet's one—hundred—seventy—seven longest rivers run freely from source to sea. Human pollution threatens virtually every one of the world's major "rivers. Coastal waters throughout the world are polluted such that people are warned not to enter. According to a report by the United States Environmental Program there are at least two hundred oxygengstarved "dead zones" in the world's seas, caused by excessive runoff of fertilizers, sewage and other land—based pollution. Greenpeace researchers have taken samples from a swarm of floating plastic that stretches across an area the size of Texas. Scientists note that human activity is altering the very chemical composition and temperature of the oceans, making seawater more acidic, which in turn threatens a cascade of disturbing consequences, including the destruction of coral reefs and plankton, a chain of events that threatens the very existence of life in the oceans. Since at least the early 1990s every major fishery, of which there were then approximately seventeen, have been harvested beyond their sustainable capacity. According to a published study by Science, by 2048, if current trends of overfishing and pollution continue, edible sea life will disappear. The gross number of thirsty humans bodes for wars over water in the near-future. Personal, industrial and agricultural ' use of water has killed off many of the world's major rivers-. Rivers such as the United States’ Colorado River, China's Yellow River, and the Amu Darya of Central Asia are being drained dry before they ever reach their destinations. Sixty—five percent of the world's population is without potable water. On every continent aquifers are being emptied faster than rain and melting snows can refill them (Think of it as a ewer that receives only a finite supply of water per day perhaps enough to slake the thirst of one person. But what happens when two,-ten or a hundred people must survive from that single ewer of water?). Thirst is not the only danger. Forty percent of the world food supply comes from irrigated land. Water scarcity directly effects food production. Brown, author of Eco—Economy (2001), offers that humans, not any natural cause, are the driving force behind the "early stage of the sixth great extinction." ld., pg. 68. '-‘The share of birds, mammals, and fish that are vulnerable or in immediate danger of extinction is now measured in double digits: 12 percent of the world's nearly 10,000 bird species; 24 percent of the world's 4,763 mammal species; andan estimated 30 percent of all 25,000 fish species." |d., pg. 69. Deforestation continues at a horrific pace throughout the world due to human ignorance and greed. Debris discarded in space threatens future exploratory and scientific missions. The air of every major city is toxic. lnnumerable unwanted babies are born every day. Masses of children all over the world live without shelter, are unfed,‘uneducated, unloved One billion people live in slums. Each and every problem expressed herein, and a thousand more, is itself proof of the absolute failure of the human race, and each and every problem is traceable to human overpopulation. In 1950 the world population was 2.5 billion. By 2050 it is expected to rise to 13 billion. But at what cost? What will the quality of life be at that saturation point? THE SOLUTION was suggested as far back as 1798 by Thomas Malthus in his An Essay On The Principle Of Population. Educating hoi polloi has not worked and can never work, because simple knowledge is not enough to stem the human urge to procreate. Humans cannot control their urges, thus the very ability to-reproduce must be controlled. I do not advocate population control to oppress those unfortunates in poor countries or against selected ethnic groups, nor should such controls be only used to keep down the economically disadvantaged. No ruling class or religious association would be favored. The SOLUTION is to enact worldwide laws to sterilize both parents at the time of the birth of the baby. Permanent sterilization across the board. if thefather is not present, then the baby would be sterilized. Any second child born would result in both children being taken from the parents, and both parents being incarcerated for a minimum of ten years. The SOLUTION may seem barbaric at first glance, but it must be strict for the. sake of saving the planet and improving the quality of life of all of Her life forms (I would advocate a more severe penalty, but am offering here a relatively moderate position). The target reduction number would be that number where humans are no longer destroying the planet and her flora an.d fauna, Earth, environment or space, where no person goes hungry, where there is not a single unwanted, shelterless, unfed, uneducated, unloved baby or child. The‘ SOLUT|ON will not rid the world of all conflict, but it will restore the quality of life for all generations to come, and may well save the human race from itself.’ ‘ The SOLUT|ON must be implemented now, without exception.
