The Fallout Settles Frederick Mason USP Tucson #55487-056 PO Box 24550 Tucson, AZ 85734 It is June 15th of 2016, 2M WEEKS since I wrote the email to Recreation Supervisor Gillooly, then one to the Warden, regarding Ms, Huffstuttler, who was at the very least, very disrespectful, and at worst, discriminatory to black inmates. The initial response was on Tuesday, May 31st, when Gillooly came to talk to me about the situation. But to this point, 2M weeks later, there has been no response, or action, against Huffstuttler. Sadly, this was predictable. I fully expected staff here to support their own- even if they're 10 0% wrong. What's odd, during the lockdown we had the week of June 5th, many inmates were interviewed regarding possible rumors of escape or racial tension, I told one of the officers that I hadn't seen any racial tensions with inmates, but rather with staff... and told him about Huffstuttler. Whether he noted it sincerely I don't know. But another inmate told me he was interviewed by one of the AWs (Assistant Warden) who may have been above Gillooly. He might be AW Gillette. Anyway, in their talk, the inmate made mention to the AW that he had heard many inmates complain about Huffstuttler. The inmate told me that the AW said that they've heard that more than once about her. Ok...so, if there is a clear note of complaints abut this person... why don't they DO something? If the AW knows Huffstuttler is a problem, if the Recreation Supervisor knows Huffstuttler is a problem, if numerous inmates complain about this woman's lack of professionalism- why isn't the prison doing anything about it? If the prison isn't willing to take steps to discipline their officers, why then should we, as inmates have any respect for the staff and officers? This is not a one-way street: the prison is expected to act professionally and treat us like human beings. Yet the bad officers and staff here treat inmates like trash, and dishonor the uniform they wear. It's quite cowardly how they act, then hide behind a blue or white shirt as if BOP endorses cruel behavior^ So, as the fallout settles, do I stir it up again? The fact is, nothing was done, and unless Huffstuttler physically slaps an inmate, the prison will protect her racist attitude by looking the other way... which makes them just as bad as she is. I will not go quietly into on that sour note. I have banned myself from ALL activity in Recreation, in protest of how terribly the prison has handled this situation. On Monday (June 13th) Shelby asked me if I was going to do the Bingo games for B1 and Dl, since they won the Compound Sports Challenge. I told him flatly, "no". Shelby said "but it won't be in the recreation, it will be in their dorms". I told him that it's still part of recreation, so I will not support it. I will NOT do anything for a department that allows Huffstuttler a free pass for being discriminatory to inmates. The irony, these same people are having a "Diversity Day", which supposedly is to encourage diversity with all races on the compound. How ironic that they'd do that, yet when a staff member shows racist actions, they do nothing to her at all. Yet, if I was wrong, I'd be in the SHU for making inflammatory remarks. If I'm the only inmate inside of a couple of months to say it, with no credible proof, then I can see them protecting the integrity of Huffstuttler. However, it must be quite clear, if the video on Memorial Day evening CLEARLY shows what Huffstuttler did, by letting 2-3 white inmates in the room, but not the 6-8 black inmates that were also there, and if the AW said he'd heard complaints against her, and Gillooly was informed- why hasn't anyone done anything? The same night, Huffstuttler was adamant about running out the black guy who helped me (Singleton) in the 1st hour. Shelby had to play on a basketball game, so the guy helped me out. On the 2nd hour, Shelby was available, and the guy who filled in wanted to hang around. Huffstuttler wouldn't have it, so he had to go. YET, after the Bingo was over, I went into the Hobby Shop, with at least 6 white inmates in there, and some I KNEW should not have been there. She hassles the black inmates, yet does little to the white. So, what do I do? I have to document this up to this point. This essay goes out ASAP, no more waiting on the prison to do what they should have done. I've no faith in the integrity of the prison to be honorable, yet rather hypocrites and cowards for not giving inmates the credit when they're right. So I keep writing. And I will not support Recreation for ANY reason. With July 4th coming, I know they'll likely do Bingo again- I will not participate in it. Let them find another Bingo announcer, not that it's a hard position to fill. Anybody can pick up a microphone and call numbers and letters. It may be that I won't be missed. But this is a stand I have to make, even if I have to make it alone. This will be, I think, the 4th essay on this subject, and within the 2 e-mails sent, plus the journal, I have sent out quite a number of letters on this issue. I expect the dust to be whipped up again before too long. But for now, the apathy of this prison has me most disappointed in them. I suppose racism IS tolerated and encouraged by USP Tucson staff; they do nothing to address it...
